What happens to my Dropbox folder if I rename a Salesforce record?

It's a reasonable expectation, if you rename an Account or Opportunity in Salesforce, you might expect the linked Dropbox folder to update its name to match. In practice, the folder name in Dropbox stays exactly as it was when it was first created, and that's intentional.

The link between a Salesforce record and its Dropbox folder is maintained using an internal record ID, not the record's name. So renaming the record in Salesforce has no impact on the folder association, everything continues to work as normal.

The Solution

When you rename a Salesforce record, the following behaviour applies:

  • The Dropbox folder name remains unchanged, it keeps the name it had when the folder was first created.
  • The folder association is preserved, because the link is maintained via the record's internal Salesforce ID, not the name, renaming the record does not break the connection.
  • New files continue to upload into the same folder, any files added after the rename go into the existing original folder, exactly as before.
  • No relinking or manual action is required, the integration continues to function without any intervention.

This behaviour is by design to avoid breaking shared folder paths or external sharing links inside Dropbox that may have been distributed to other users.

If you would like the Dropbox folder name to reflect the updated record name, this would need to be done manually inside Dropbox directly. Note that manually renaming the folder in Dropbox will not affect the association, the link will still point to that same folder regardless of its name.
